Shattered Lives Of Montgomery County, Texas

Oak Ridge High School

April 21, 2004

As a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff Citizen's Academy Alumni Association I volunteered to help with this year's "Shattered Lives" program and played the part of one of the Grim Reapers. A video explanation of the program can be found HERE.

There were 11 students involved in the "accident". Two drunk drivers, eight passengers, and one motorcyclist. Two students were dead at the scene and the mother of one of those killed was an observer and had to identify her son's remains as part of the program. All nine injured students were transported to local hospitals; eight by ambulance and one by helicopter. All of these students later died at the hospital. Both drivers were arrested.

Every fifteen minutes throughout the day the Grim Reaper would remove a student from their classroom, and their obituary would be read to the rest of the class. It was realistic enough that some students were observed crying during this process. The "deceased" would be given a "Living Dead" t-shirt, have their face painted white, and would be allowed to return to class but they were not allowed to communicate with anyone else for the remainder of the day.

It is very expensive to put on an event of this magnitude. If you as a parent or an owner of a business feel that this is worthy of your hard earned dollars and would like to support it financially, your tax-deductible contribution to this non-profit agency will be greatly appreciated.
